The Declaration of Independence was written by American colonists in 1776 to declare their independence from Great Britain and to state the reasons for their political separation. The Declaration was also written to persuade people, both foreign and domestic, that the colonists' cause was just and that they deserved to be free and independent. The Declaration expressed the colonists' belief that the government should protect the natural rights of the people.
